“My Take” on CES 2023: USC’s Chi Hang Lo Shares His Top Impressions

By Chi Hang Lo

CES is known for its innovations and previews of future technologies. This year, I traveled to Las Vegas to learn more about the Metaverse, wearables, and sustainability to see how we can bring these technologies into higher education. In addition, to check those innovative products, I also visited the startup corner to learn about the headwinds and research projects driving massive market transformation.

Viewers from the Metaverse saw the evolution of immersive experiences, Web3 infrastructure, the tactile response of devices, and, most importantly, the shaping of media to deliver content from the digital environment to the physical world. Metaverse technologies are heavily used in gaming, entertainment, and XR demonstrations. In addition to those goodies, Metaverse could be easily integrated with online education to provide students with a multi-layered feel.

Wearable technology is an extension of the Metaverse. I’ve seen Metaverse apps with tactile stimuli for classroom objects, virtual gifts for troubleshooting network equipment, and physical exercises. Various companies are showing examples of wearable products that provide tactile responses, a sense of smell, and precise finger control of virtual objects. Over the next five years, I can imagine wearable technology becoming more naturally integrated into our eyewear, clothing, gloves, and other wearable items in our daily education activities.

Sustainability is known for curbing climate change and maintaining ecological balance for future generations. Technology leaders are integrating sustainable practices into their product development, sourcing, and transforming their production with NetZero. I see industry leaders developing their sustainability manifestos that will profoundly impact the future of technology design in the next decade.

Finally, CES 2023’s theme, “BE IN IT,” shows us how technological innovation can shape a better world, emphasizing product integration and data collection to create a scalable impact. It meets the technological trends and higher education needs of PRO AV. Software and services that enable Metaversa to have a sustainable impact. CES also reminds me of the importance of AV projects should also consider the sustainable needs of our community, avoid unnecessary waste and over-engineering.
