Epiphan Video has shared news that could have a big impact on how higher ed AV teams monitor and support classroom recording and streaming. With Epiphan MCP, staff can use Claude or ChatGPT to ask about their Pearl encoders, check what’s happening across devices, and request changes based on the answers. It connects those assistants to Epiphan Edge through Model Context Protocol, an open standard that gives AI assistants access to outside tools.
Staff can ask which devices are offline, how much storage is available, or whether recordings are running. They can also request a live channel image and audio levels to help check a classroom before a lecture or event. Being able to ask about equipment across campus and see where attention is needed could be especially useful when the same staff are responsible for supporting many rooms.
“Epiphan MCP lets an AV team ask about every Pearl they manage and act on the answer,” said George Birchall, CEO of Epiphan Video.
Those conversations can also lead to action. If a recording hasn’t started or a scheduled event needs more time, staff can request that change without leaving the conversation. According to Epiphan, the assistant can only see and do what the user’s Epiphan Edge role permits, and each write action requires approval.
Asking about devices is free with any Epiphan Edge account, so campuses can explore that visibility without needing Premium for those queries. Actions that change something require Epiphan Edge Premium, with support for Pearl-2, Pearl Mini, Pearl Nano, and Pearl Nexus. Pausing and resuming recordings requires firmware 4.24.6 or later. Visit Epiphan’s MCP page for more information about checking devices, supported controls, and getting connected.
