“My Take” on the Epson America Higher Ed Summit 2023
By Erin Maher-Moran
Last week I had the pleasure of visiting Epson America’s headquarters in Los Alamitos, CA. They were hosting their Higher Education council’s Winter Summit. After a quick breakfast we went on a tour of their amazing facility. One of the first things you encounter when you enter the building is a one-of-a-kind projection work by Refik Anadol. It is such a beautiful combination of art and technology. It is displayed using 4 Epson Pro L20002UNL WUXGA 3LCD projectors on a custom DaLite Parallax screen. Also prominently displayed is the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development, along with a timeline of Epson technologies. All around the facility they have photos and artwork that have all been printed on various surfaces using Epson printers bringing vibrant pops of color to the industrial interior design. There are spaces off of the main area that show off their various product lines from print to projection.
After the tour, we all gathered to listed to Gary Kayye, founder of rAVe Media and teacher at UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Media and Journalism. He shared with the group the implementation of AV technology that recently occurred at his school. They have a couple of variations for active learning spaces which include mic arrays and PTZ cameras for a BYOD environment.
Epson shared with us their roadmap for some of their projectors including a demonstration of 360-degree immersive projection as well as a shoot out of some of their flagship models all lined up. They also allowed some time for the council members to share projects they have been working on or have recently completed. It is always fantastic to see what other Universities are up to. Of course, the best part of any Higher Ed AV gathering is the networking, and there was no shortage of that. Epson put on a wonderful event. As Shaquille O’Neal, the spokesperson for Epson’s EcoTank Supertank Refillable Ink Printers says, “Just Fill and Chill.”
