HETMA Celebrates Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month: Honoring Diversity in the AV Industry

The Higher Education Technology Managers Alliance (HETMA) is proud to celebrate Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15. This month recognizes the rich culture, history, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino communities across the United States and offers an opportunity to honor Hispanic and Latino Americans’ significant impact on the audiovisual (AV) industry and beyond.

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories and cultures of American citizens whose ancestors hail from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America each year. The observation began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to a month-long recognition by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. This 30-day period encompasses key historical dates, including the anniversaries of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15, as well as Mexico on September 16 and Chile on September 18. Columbus Day, or Día de la Raza, also falls within this period, on October 12.

Hispanic/Latino professionals in the AV industry represent 15.7% of the workforce across the United States, contributing their expertise, creativity, and innovation to audiovisual design, integration, and technology management. Hispanic/Latino integrator companies are crucial in delivering cutting-edge AV solutions, fostering inclusive learning environments, and advancing the industry’s growth.

HETMA remains committed to celebrating diversity within the AV sector. We recognize that the contributions of Hispanic and Latino professionals are integral to shaping the future of audiovisual technology in higher education. We are dedicated to supporting initiatives that uplift underrepresented communities and promote inclusive practices across the industry.
