Each month I usually start writing one article and end up publishing another. This month’s topic started during the Wi-Fi Assistive Listening Devices panel at the HETMA 2026 Virtual Conference. What began as a discussion about accessibility technology quickly turned into a conversation many of us in higher education AV know all too well: rooms that were never designed to sound good in the first place.
Every campus has one.
It is usually a large lecture hall that looks impressive in renderings but becomes a challenge the moment someone turns on a microphone. Hard surfaces everywhere. A deep balcony. Reflective walls. Maybe a ceiling designed more for architectural drama than speech intelligibility. The sound arrives everywhere except where it is supposed to, and the result is a room where students struggle to clearly understand what is being said even when the system is technically working.
Let’s talk about an institutional use case. An institution has a lecture hall with such poor acoustics that students had been complaining about intelligibility since the building opened in 2012. The reflections were so severe that even a properly tuned sound system could not overcome the physics of the room. The correct solution would have been acoustic treatment, redesigning the loudspeaker coverage, or both.
The problem was money.
The institution knew the room needed work, but leadership did not want to invest in a major redesign because it was a brand-new facility, and while being new, they already saw program growth and began to plan for a new facility. Instead of spending significant capital on a room that would eventually be replaced, the space was left as it was. Unfortunately, that meant years of students sitting in a lecture hall where hearing clearly required more effort than it should. No acoustic treatment and no upgrades to the audio system that would involve new speaker locations.
That is where assistive listening technology entered the conversation.
For many years, assistive listening systems were treated purely as accessibility compliance tools. They existed to meet ADA requirements and provide accommodation for individuals with hearing loss. Those systems are still incredibly important and absolutely necessary, but modern assistive listening technologies are beginning to serve another purpose as well. They can help compensate for environments where acoustics work against intelligibility.
Wi-Fi-based assistive listening systems and emerging technologies like Auracast take the instructor’s microphone feed and deliver it directly to a listener’s personal device or receiver. Instead of relying solely on sound traveling through the room, the audio can reach the listener without reflections, delays, or background noise interfering.
In a perfectly designed lecture hall, that may simply be a helpful accessibility feature. In a poorly designed one, it can become something more significant. A lifeline.
Think about what actually happens in a room with problematic acoustics. The instructor’s voice leaves the loudspeaker and immediately begins bouncing around the space. Reflections from the back wall arrive fractions of a second later. Balcony surfaces send energy back toward the stage. Hard ceilings scatter sound in directions that were never intended. The listener ends up hearing a mixture of direct sound and reflected sound that smears speech clarity.
No amount of DSP magic can fix that once the room itself becomes the problem.
Delivering the microphone signal directly to the listener removes that entire acoustic journey from the equation. The voice they hear is clean, immediate, and free of the reflections that cause the room to feel muddy or distant.
Is that the correct long-term solution? No.
The correct solution will always be designing rooms with acoustics in mind from the beginning. That means proper absorption, controlled reflections, and loudspeaker coverage that matches the architecture of the space. When those things are done right, intelligibility improves for everyone without requiring additional technology.
But many of us do not live in that ideal world.
Higher education AV teams regularly inherit rooms that were designed without acoustics as a priority. Budgets are limited. Renovations compete with other institutional priorities. Sometimes the building is scheduled to be replaced in a few years, and leadership does not want to fund major improvements in the meantime.
In those situations, assistive listening can become a surprisingly effective bridge.
Wi-Fi-based assistive listening systems already allow institutions to stream audio directly to smartphones through apps or provide dedicated receivers for those who prefer them. Students who struggle to hear clearly in a reflective space can listen to the instructor’s microphone feed without the room interfering.
However, deploying these systems is not always as simple as plugging in a transmitter and downloading an app.
Because the audio is delivered over the network, AV teams quickly find themselves working closely with networking and cybersecurity departments. That can introduce challenges such as network segmentation, multicast traffic considerations, firewall rules, and questions about how audio streams move across campus infrastructure. Security teams may want assurances about authentication, encryption, and whether the system could expose other traffic on the network.
Those conversations are important and necessary, but they can slow down deployment if AV and IT teams are not aligned early in the process. Like many technologies in modern classrooms, assistive listening systems increasingly live at the intersection of AV, networking, and cybersecurity.
There is also a practical cultural consideration that sometimes comes up when institutions first explore these systems. When audio is delivered directly to personal devices, people occasionally ask whether private conversations might also be transmitted.
The reality is simple. Classroom microphone systems are meant for instructional audio. If a microphone is live, the expectation should be that it is part of the learning environment. Personal conversations are still best saved for faculty office hours or private discussions outside the classroom.

Emerging technologies like Auracast introduce another interesting possibility. Because it is based on Bluetooth broadcast audio, it allows a single transmitter to send audio to potentially unlimited receivers. That includes hearing aids, earbuds, and other consumer devices that support the technology. Instead of requiring a specialized receiver checkout process, the infrastructure could allow students to connect directly from the devices they already carry every day.
The promise is exciting, particularly for higher education environments where accessibility, flexibility, and cost all matter.
But it is also important to acknowledge where the technology stands today. While Auracast has generated a great deal of interest, it is not yet widely available across the consumer device ecosystem. Many hearing aids and a small number of new earbuds support it, but widespread adoption across smartphones and personal listening devices is still developing. Institutions exploring Auracast today should do so with the understanding that the device landscape is still catching up.
That does not diminish the potential.
If Auracast reaches the level of adoption many expect, it could dramatically simplify assistive listening deployment. Instead of maintaining receiver inventories or relying solely on smartphone apps, campuses could broadcast audio in the same way Wi-Fi networks broadcast data today. Students would simply join the audio stream using devices they already own.
For higher education, that kind of accessibility built into everyday technology could be transformative.
That brings us back to the story from earlier. The institution that deployed Wi-Fi assistive listening in their acoustically problematic lecture hall did not claim it solved every issue. The room still had reflections. The architecture still worked against the sound system. The acoustics were still fundamentally flawed.
But students who used the system reported a dramatically clearer listening experience.
In other words, the technology became a practical workaround while the institution waited for a better long-term facility.
Sometimes in AV we search for perfect solutions when what we really need are effective ones. Assistive listening will never replace good acoustic design. It will never turn a problematic lecture hall into a perfectly tuned performance space.
What it can do is ensure that when a student sits down to learn, they are able to clearly hear the instructor.
And in higher education, that is the outcome that matters most.
