We are starting a new feature here at Higher Ed AV Media focused on Prism Scholars. Prism is a scholarship created through a joint effort between AVIXA and HETMA, targeted at underrepresented populations in higher ed AV. The first cohort of 10 was selected in 2022. Benefits of the scholarship include a one-year Elite membership to AVIXA, the cost of taking the CTS exam and a virtual prep course, a personal mentor, networking opportunities, and a free trip to InfoComm.
New cohorts have happened annually since then, giving a boost to numerous careers. This new series will spotlight a different recipient each month to explore the Prism process and how things have gone since their participation in the program. Our first spotlight falls on Kameesha Jones, DEI chair for HETMA.
About You & Your Work
To start, tell us who you are and what you do. How did your path lead into higher ed AV?
My name is Kameesha Jones, and I am an AV Project Manager at Florida International University. I serve as the AV liaison between our clients and student teams, ensuring audiovisual needs are met seamlessly for campus events.
My passion for audiovisual production began while pursuing my master’s degree in Music Production and Management. During that time, I interned at the Adrienne Arsht Center, where I assisted with large-scale productions at the performing arts center. Working closely with seasoned production crews allowed me to learn firsthand how they built their careers, and they shared valuable insights that helped me strengthen my skills and deepen my understanding of the field.
After graduating, I refined my approach when applying for roles by adjusting how I communicated my experience, which opened the door to opportunities in audiovisual production. I started my career working in museums and later joined New York University in New York City as an AV Technician for events. That role marked a turning point in my career and allowed me to grow professionally at an accelerated pace.
My time at New York University played a significant role in shaping the AV professional I am today and laid the foundation for my continued growth in higher ed and event technology.
What does a typical day in your role look like, and what does a “busy day” look like when everything hits at once?
A typical day in my role involves preparing for upcoming events. I review the building’s weekly schedule and begin coordinating with my staff, as well as preparing all equipment to ensure everything is functioning properly and fully up to date. I also conduct test runs with my team to confirm they are ready and familiar with the event requirements.
On particularly busy days, the building is taken over by internal or external clients hosting multiple events, such as conferences or other high-profile gatherings. During these times, most of the rooms are in use, and I manage a full team of student employees assigned to specific spaces. I spend the day moving throughout the building, troubleshooting issues as they arise, such as internet connectivity problems, unexpected system updates during events, audio issues, or challenges with live event streaming. When multiple events are happening simultaneously, the pace is fast, and we remain constantly engaged to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Outside of work, how do you unwind and recharge?
I am highly active in my community, and in my free time, I volunteer through my production company by providing AV services to support fine arts programs at local middle and high schools. Outside of my community work, I enjoy taking advantage of Miami living by spending time at the beach, relaxing, and soaking up the sun.
The Road to Prism
When were you selected as a Prism Scholarship recipient?
I was selected as a Prism Scholarship recipient in the 2023 cohort.
What motivated you to apply? Was there someone who encouraged you, or was it an internal push?
Alesia Hendley encouraged me to apply for the scholarship. At that stage in my career, my focus was on sharing my story and continuing to elevate my AV career. When Alesia and I discussed the opportunity, she strongly recommended that I apply, and I am truly grateful that I took her advice.
What was happening in your career or life that made Prism feel like the right next step?
There was a period in my career when I felt I wasn’t doing enough to truly excel. I was uncertain about the direction I wanted to pursue, and I found myself searching for clarity. When I learned about the Prism Scholarship and reviewed its benefits, I realized it aligned with what I needed to move forward and get more out of my career. Applying felt like the right step to help me grow professionally and refocus my path.
How did you feel when you got the news, and who did you share it with first? Why?
For the first time in my career, I truly felt seen when I learned that I had been awarded the Prism Scholarship. It was an incredibly emotional moment for me, and I immediately shared the news with my family. They had witnessed the challenges and uncertainty I faced in my career journey, so celebrating this achievement with them made the moment even more meaningful.
Inside the Scholarship Experience
What did you enjoy most about the Prism experience?
What I valued most about the Prism experience was the incredible support I received from the HETMA community. They provided me with the tools, guidance, and resources I needed to be successful, and their encouragement played a meaningful role in my professional growth.
What proved most challenging, and how did you work through it? Any study or memorization approaches you found especially effective and would recommend to others?
The study approach that worked best for me was participating in the AVIXA Women’s Council study sessions. These sessions were hosted with subject matter experts, where we reviewed chapters from the book, broke down questions and answers together, and discussed effective test-taking strategies. The guidance and insights they provided were extremely helpful in preparing me for success.
Certification Status & Outcomes
Where are you right now in your CTS journey?
I am in the process of studying again for the CTS because I didn’t pass it, and I missed it by a few points.
If you haven’t sat or passed yet, what hurdles are still in the way?
I realized that I was standing in my own way when it came to taking and passing the exam. Over time, I’ve improved my time management by intentionally carving out dedicated study periods. Having already taken the test, I now have a stronger understanding of the material and know what to expect, which has increased my confidence and better prepared me for success.
Growth, Community & Professional Trajectory
Looking back, which accomplishments or moments in your career are you most proud of? Any current project you’re excited about?
Mentorship is a core value in my career, and I have consistently dedicated my time to teaching and mentoring college students at HBCUs who are majoring in music recording and broadcasting. I support them by sharing resources, helping them strengthen their résumés, and offering a realistic perspective on career opportunities after graduation.
Currently, I have built a strong pipeline with the internship department at the Miami Heat. Through this connection, two students I mentor are now interns with the organization, one in the marketing department and the other with HeatTV. I take great pride in creating opportunities that help students successfully transition from college into their professional careers and begin building meaningful industry experience.
How have communities like HETMA, AVIXA, or other higher ed groups influenced your growth or opened doors?
The higher ed AV community has been an incredible network, connecting me with inspiring professionals and meaningful opportunities. Through this community, I’ve been able to share my story on various AV platforms and even had the opportunity to host an educational session at InfoComm. Being part of the higher ed AV space has encouraged me to be more open about my journey and to represent perspectives in the AV industry that are not often seen.
In addition, this community has reinforced my passion for mentorship, allowing me to support and guide other AV professionals as they navigate their own career paths.
What impact has the Prism Scholarship and the Prism community had on you personally and professionally? Anything that surprised you?
The Prism community has become much more than just a program to me; it has become a group of trusted colleagues I can turn to when facing challenges at my university, especially those where others may have already navigated similar experiences. The community is always quick to offer support, share insight, and provide valuable resources I can use.
I am truly grateful for the Prism community, as they not only support me but also continuously challenge me to grow and be the best AV professional I can be for my university.
Where do you see your career heading over the next few years?
Over the next few years, I plan to transition out of higher ed and focus on building a full-scale mentorship program centered on AV and live production. I am deeply passionate about developing the next generation of AV professionals, particularly because of the fresh perspectives this generation brings to the industry.
Their innovative ways of thinking offer new approaches to enhancing live events, improving workflows, and embracing emerging technologies such as AI. I believe this mindset, focused on creativity, adaptability, and innovation, is exactly what the AV industry needs to continue evolving and staying relevant. Supporting and mentoring young professionals in this space allows me to contribute to a stronger, more forward-thinking future for AV.
